For the second part of his first solo exhibition at Galerie Buchholz Berlin, Yuji Agematsu presents *Marseille, 1994*, an installation of 35 mm slide projections. The photographs were taken in Marseille in 1994 and have previously been shown only in three one-night performances: at Anthology Film Archives, New York, in 2004; CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco, in 2017; and Pratt Institute, New York, in 2025. At Galerie Buchholz, the work is presented for the first time as an expanded installation. Agematsu describes the photographs as casual, blurry, and unplanned images of streets, people, sky, water, and found objects. He reflects on how time changes photography: after years in storage, the images appear almost as if made by someone else. The aging slide projectors are part of the work’s fragility — bulbs may go dark, slides may jam, or the projections may stop altogether. Yuji Agematsu was born in 1956 in Kanagawa, Japan, and has lived in New York since 1980. His work is held in major collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Whitney Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Walker Art Center, Pinault Collection, and Loewe Foundation. Recent solo exhibitions include the Judd Foundation, New York; Secession, Vienna; and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
