Long after being watched, Hollywood films continue to live in our collective imagination. Their narratives and settings shape our moral universe and sense of place, while their leading stars fuel untold desires and dreams of success. Recognizing this influence, many contemporary artists mine mainstream cinema to create works that examine Hollywood’s compelling artifice and mythmaking. Drawn entirely from the museum’s collection, the artworks displayed here respond to the cultural impact of commercial films and beloved TV shows, continuing an exploration of themes traced by the nearby exhibition Staging California in Early Hollywood.
