From Cannon Fodder to Avant-Garde—The Forgotten Soldiers Who Freed Europe heimate . Tirailleurs: Trials and Tribulations is a large-scale exhibition and research project at Haus der Kulturen der Welt exploring the overlooked role of colonial soldiers—particularly African Tirailleurs—in the liberation of France and Europe during World War II and their lasting impact on postwar society. The exhibition brings together over 30 international artists, new commissions, archival materials, films, and research collaborations to examine histories of colonial military service, exploitation, memory, migration, and resistance. It also connects these histories to broader global patterns of using colonized peoples as "human resources" in wars and political projects.
