After Nature Prize 26

Stelios Kallinikou (*1985) devotes his project to the Akrotiri Salt Lake, which is part of the British military base and thus the overseas territory in Cyprus. As an important wetland biotope in the eastern Mediterranean, the lake provides habitat for numerous animal and plant species and is at the same time close to some of the oldest archaeological sites in Cyprus. Kallinikou makes the tensions between military use, ecological fragility and cultural heritage of the place tangible by interweaving different time levels. Between photography, film and sculpture, a project is created that makes visible the complex relationships between land, borders and sovereignty and makes us think about colonial legacies on the edge of Europe. Susanne Kriemann's (*1972) project builds on her many years of work with uranium and the atomic age. At the intersection of photography, science and poetry, she uses pitchblende, also called uraninite and one of the oldest minerals on earth, as a starting point to reflect geological and atomic time scales. For this purpose, she uses early photographic methods such as autoradiography, screen printing and heliography. The works combine the abstract aesthetic that radiation leaves on the photographic material with poetic texts and a site-specific scenography. Her project opens up a critical examination of the imagery and applications of radioactivity and invites us to understand radiation as a central factor in the relationship between humans and the environment.
