Afterimage: Deconstructing Memories

The exhibition Afterimage: Deconstructing Memories examines the interplay between vision and memory through the works of artists Hannah Becher and Paula Muhr, focusing on the presence of deceased parents. Becher's series Blue Memory features cyanotypes created from her mother's garden photographs, transforming personal visual records into new forms that reflect the fragmented nature of memory. This process highlights how memories are shaped by loss and reinterpretation rather than being exact reproductions of the past. Paula Muhr's multimedia installation Tata, Gone (2026) integrates family photographs, her own images of her father, and narrative reflections, creating an evolving exploration of their relationship. Together, these works illustrate how memories serve as transformed traces of experiences, emphasizing their inherent impermanence and the complex ways in which we remember.
