Alicja und Bożena Wahl: Tensions

With ‘Tensions’, the CCA Berlin presents the first comprehensive posthumous exhibition of the Polish twin sisters Alicja (1932-2020) and Bożena (1932-2025) Wahl. Her work includes drawings, paintings and stage sets and focuses on the female body as a place of desire, vulnerability and projection. The motif of doubling points to the intimate and at the same time complicated dialogue of the sisters; In particular, her drawings of the 1960s and 1970s are hardly distinguishable from each other. Hybrid creatures and distorted bodies reflect the struggle between independence and connectedness, as well as conflicting needs, lust, pain, and shame. Archive materials, photographs, letters and invitations classify the work internationally and in the context of the Polish art scene. Designs, illustrations and book covers show his interdisciplinary spectrum. Since 1979, Alicja Wahl's gallery A.B. Wahl has combined exhibition space, residential building and studio and has had a lasting impact on Warsaw's cultural scene.
