Andrea Hernández Briceño: Fire Becomes Spirit

International Center of Photography, 79 Essex St, 10002, New York City

June 24, 2026 – September 13, 2026

Andrea Hernández Briceño's exhibition, "Fire Becomes Spirit," at ICP’s Incubator, showcases her documentation of the indigenous Huöttöja people in the Amazon basin, a project initiated in 2024. The Huöttöja community faces the dual challenge of cultural preservation amidst the encroaching mining industry, which promises wealth but risks cultural dilution. Hernández Briceño aims to reflect their worldview and spirituality through a long-term relationship with the community, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humans and nature. A Venezuelan journalist and visual storyteller, she focuses on gender, environment, and social issues, ensuring the dignity of her subjects is central to her narratives. Her accolades include the Women Photograph grant and multiple POY Latams awards. The ICP Incubator Space is dedicated to emerging photographers, presenting projects that challenge and expand the documentary tradition.
