Art of Native America: The Charles and Valerie Diker Collection

This long-term installation celebrates the skill and cultural importance of Native American artists from across the United States and Canada through historical and contemporary works. Representing more than fifty Indigenous groups, it includes major forms such as painting, sculpture, textiles, beadwork, basketry, and ceramics, showing how Native art has served everyday, ceremonial, and survival purposes, from clothing and containers to objects used for hunting, protection, childcare, and healing. Most works date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but modern and contemporary pieces are also included to show the continuity of Native artistic traditions. Organized by seven regions, the installation reflects the diversity of Native life while also addressing the effects of colonialism and environmental harm. Built largely from promised gifts, donations, and loans, it underscores the American Wing’s commitment to presenting Native art in inclusive, meaningful context and to expanding public understanding of Native histories, cultures, and aesthetics.
