Our holdings of the Arts of the Islamic World represent a wide range of artistic traditions from Islamic cultures located in Asia and Africa, as well as parts of Europe and diasporic communities worldwide. Objects span fourteen centuries from the seventh century to today, created in ceramics, glass, metalwork, textiles, and works on paper. The presentation is organized thematically, with separate sections on religious and secular arts. The Religious Art gallery features Qur'ans and mosque furnishings, including a prayer carpet displayed on the ground with related tiles. Secular galleries explore themes including Rulers and Authority, Palatial Surroundings, Fine Dining, the Literary World, Personal Luxury, Science and Magic, and Nomadic Life. The museum holds the country's most expansive collection of Qajar period paintings from Iran.
