Aubrey Levinthal, Biala und Tal R: From the Sleep Side

On the occasion of Berlin Art Week, Haverkampf Leistenschneider presents a cross-generational and cross-continental exhibition that places the recent works of the American painter Aubrey Levinthal in direct visual and thematic relation to works by Biala (Janice Biala, 1903-2000) and Tal R (*1967). The three positions combine a contemporary, figurative painting that subtly alienates seemingly familiar situations and explores the boundary between intimacy and enigmatic distance. Closed eyes, overpainted mirrors, shifted perspectives and tilting interiors point to the secret behind everyday life. The focus is on the viability of vulnerability, the passing of time and the question of how the private can become universal. Biala's intimate, tactile pictorial spaces combine European Modernism and New York School; Tal R combines Art Brut, Folk Art, Expressionism, Symbolism and Fauvism; In her paintings, Levinthal balances between melancholy and warmth, community and isolation. The exhibition makes Biala's influence on younger generations of painters visible and gives the Jewish-American artist a new presence in Berlin.
