Carina Brandes: Hauntings

Carina Brandes (*1982 in Braunschweig, lives and works in Leipzig) combines photography, performance and collage into cinematic image narratives. She uses her own body as an artistic instrument and uses the self-timer to document performative actions that explore the material and symbolic boundaries of the body. It re-appropriates the objectifying view of the skin. In her recent work, however, the skin is becoming increasingly out of focus. Brandes cuts the photographic surface and merges it into new image constellations; the body remains present in the voids and fault lines between the fragments. The exhibition at BQ is dedicated to singular and at the same time recurring moments in which the most familiar appears foreign in the face of the other. Photographic sequences intertwine the real and the surreal and open up dreamlike pictorial spaces. Like a dream or a spirit, the unconscious seeks the viewer home and re-enrolls in the images.
