C/O Berlin, Hardenbergstraße 22-24, 10623, Berlin
September 11, 2026 – February 3, 2027
C/O Berlin presents the first comprehensive retrospective of Carrie Mae Weems in Berlin. With more than 100 photographs and videos from over four decades, the exhibition showcases the work of one of the most influential contemporary artists. Weems combines personal experiences with social and historical questions and focuses on stories, people and places that are often hidden in historical narratives. Based on her own biography, she deals with questions of race, gender, power and memory. Family, home spaces, museums, monuments and Black denominations become scenes of history, identity and belonging. With documentary, staged and conceptual strategies, Weems develops a poetic and political pictorial language that questions common ideas of history and representation. The project of the Gallerie d'Italia, Museum of the Intesa Sanpaolo, will be adapted and presented by C/O Berlin in collaboration with Aperture.
