Curated by Udo Kittelmann, ‘Fly on Amanita’ presents a new video installation by Carsten Höller at Passage am Hermannplatz in Berlin. A throwing fly cleans itself, takes a drop of Amanita muscaria, gets into a changed state, recovers and begins anew. The endlessly repetitive work oscillates between laboratory experimentation and 1990s music video, transforming a microscopic event into a surprisingly human drama. Höller, a trained agroentomologist, explores in his work the unstable boundary between scientific experimentation and artistic experience. Flying raises questions about perception, instinct and consciousness, while fly fungus as an agent of transformation dissolves certainties of ordinary experience. The video work isolates the biological encounter with clinical precision and at the same time suggests comparisons with human behavior.
