Cevdet Erek—them and us

In »them and us«, his second solo exhibition at neugerriemschneider, Cevdet Erek continues his ongoing engagement with the sonic potential of architecture and the architectural potential of sound. The exhibition shows recent sculptural works with stadium-like constructions that reflect social dynamics and forms of connection, division and belonging. In wall works and a large-scale sound installation made of clay stones, gold leaf and natural dyes mark the guest blocks of football stadiums to which fans of the away team are referred. Without people, symbols and banners, the works appear timeless and at the same time evoke associations with the theatre and show struggle of antiquity as well as with their current analogies. A driving, archaic-looking multi-channel soundtrack reinforces this effect: Its penetrating percussive rhythms are reminiscent of the synergistic or competing drumming of a stadium audience.
