Christo – Air

Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, Grosvenor Hill 20, W1K 3QD, London

May 21, 2026 – August 21, 2026

Gagosian presents an exhibition of works by Christo, featuring a large-scale indoor installation conceived with Jeanne-Claude in 1968, centered on the theme of air. This exhibition brings together the historic, unrealized project and rare early works that highlight the conceptual foundations of Christo's practice. In the 1960s, Christo and Jeanne-Claude explored the idea of wrapped air, encapsulating it in transparent polyethylene packages tied with rope, transforming the invisible into the tangible. These sculptural gestures suggest that value and meaning arise from containment rather than the object itself. The exhibition foreshadows Christo's later large-scale interventions, where wrapping redefines buildings and landscapes, emphasizing the ephemeral nature of perception. The centerpiece, Air Package on a Ceiling, is a vast, illuminated installation measuring 16 by 10 meters, originally intended for the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and now realized for the first time, inviting viewers to engage with the concept of air.
