Die DDR auf der Venedig Biennale: Ein Prozess

ifa-Galerie Berlin, Linienstraße 139-140, 10115, Berlin

September 11, 2026 – September 11, 2026

The Venice Biennale was never just an exhibition of contemporary art, but always a place of political representation and international recognition. Lucia Schreyer takes the audience on an associative course through the history of German presence in Venice. Starting from the creation of the German Pavilion, the lecture on the diplomatic efforts of the GDR since the 1960s, on the Dissident Biennial 1977 to the first official appearance of the GDR in 1982, and finally forms the arc to the current German Pavilion with Henrike Naumann and Sung Tieu. Along recurring motives such as violence and resistance, hope and peace, the lecture opens up connections between historical and contemporary positions and questions the role of art in times of political upheaval.
