Doyle Lane: Master of Clay

The exhibition "Doyle Lane: Master of Clay" presents the first major retrospective of Los Angeles ceramic artist Doyle Lane (1923–2002). It features over 100 works spanning from the 1950s to the 1980s, showcasing Lane's journey from functional pottery to large-scale architectural commissions and monumental murals. The exhibition highlights how Lane expanded the boundaries of ceramics in mid-20th-century California, situating his work within the context of California modernism and the Southern California studio ceramics movement. It also addresses the challenges he faced as a Black artist. Developed through extensive archival research and interviews with Lane's family, friends, and collaborators, the exhibition reunites works that have been dispersed across various collections. Additionally, visitors can view Lane's significant 1964 Mutual Savings and Loan Mural at The Huntington, a large installation made of 4,876 individually glazed tiles.
