Ersan Mondtag: Dispair

With »Dispair«, Dittrich & Schlechtriem presents Ersan Mondtag's first solo exhibition in the gallery. Mondtags Praxis moves at the interface of visual arts, theatre, opera and film and combines sculpture, installation, performance and space into a common visual language. At the center is the body as a carrier of memory; Personal history and collective memory inscribe themselves in materials, gestures, attitudes and architectural spaces. The group of works created especially for the exhibition includes large-scale sculptures made of carbonized wood as well as reliefs made of wood and silicone. The materials negotiate transience, desire, destruction and preservation as well as the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. Carbonated wood refers to cycles of growth, destruction and preservation, while silicone introduces a bodily, almost epidermal quality.
