Exquisite Corpse

Pace presents Exquisite Corpse, an exhibition curated by Loie Hollowell in response to her appreciation of influential Austro-American artist Kiki Kogelnik. In conversation with contemporaries Sascha Braunig and Veronika Pausova, Hollowell discovered that Kogelnik's work had equally impacted their practices. This exhibition brings together works by all four cross-continental, multigenerational artists. The title references a collaborative Surrealist parlor game from 1925 where artists take turns drawing or writing sections of a body on folded paper, perfectly descriptive of how artists inspire and influence each other over time and distance. The paintings, works on paper, and sculptures exemplify each artist's commitment to exploring the body, particularly the female body, forming a lineage of bodily abstraction with vibrant colors and deliberate mark-making. Rather than representing the body as stable, each artist approaches the figure as a site of tension—stretched, flattened, cut up, and transformed. The works wrestle with ideas of the body as machine, modular system, and site shaped by technology, labor, and scientific developments. Feminism and the question of what it means to make a feminist image are central to this collection, with each artist reckoning in her own way with the identity of "feminist.
