Fabergé from the Matilda Geddings Gray Foundation Collection

This exhibition presents a major Fabergé collection once owned by Matilda Geddings Gray, whose will ensured it would remain publicly accessible. It highlights the history and artistry of the House of Fabergé, founded in Saint Petersburg by Peter Carl Fabergé, who expanded it into a world-famous luxury enterprise and became closely associated with the Russian imperial family. The show features three of the fifty Imperial Easter Eggs made for the Romanovs, including the Imperial Danish Palaces Egg, the Imperial Caucasus Egg, and the Imperial Napoleonic Egg, each combining exquisite materials with hidden “surprise” interiors and rich historical symbolism. A centerpiece is the Lilies-of-the-Valley Basket, widely regarded as Fabergé’s floral masterpiece and the most important work by the artist in a U.S. collection. Together, the objects reveal Fabergé’s technical brilliance, the scale of his workshop, and the opulence of imperial Russian court culture.
