References to the ‘family’ theme are illustrated by two silk paintings on display: On the one hand, the depiction of the nursing goddess Hariti, who is worshipped as the protector of the children. On the other hand, an exceptionally rare and freshly restored silk painting depicting female Manichaean clergymen (Electae) who left their families to devote themselves entirely to religion. ‘Family and Religion’ is the alternating presentations in the permanent exhibition ‘Kunst von der Nordenen Seidenstraße’ of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, in the dome room, room 317.
