'Frank Bowling. Like Water,' the artist's first solo exhibition in East Asia, brings together works from the 1960s to 2020, showcasing his mastery of surface texture. Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA, regarded as one of Britain's most significant living artists, has rigorously pursued a practice that boldly expands the possibilities of paint for over six decades. Born in British Guiana in 1934, Bowling arrived in London in 1953 and graduated from the Royal College of Art with the silver medal for painting in 1962. His early work combined figurative, symbolic and abstract elements. After moving to New York in 1966, he increasingly focused on material, process and color, abandoning figurative imagery by 1971. Around 1973, he began creating his iconic Poured Paintings, tilting custom platforms to allow paint to cascade across surfaces, mimicking natural water movement. Returning to London in 1975, his sculptural paintings of the 1980s incorporated embedded objects like newsprint and foam.
