Inga Somdyala: The Mountains Of My Youth

The exhibition »The Mountains of My Youth« refers to Moshekwa Langa's installation »The Mountains of My Youth—A Novel« (1997) and focuses on the mountain as a place where experiences work beyond the moment of their occurrence and continue to shape the way of life and the development of an artistic practice. Inga Somdyala works out of this constant state and draws on a visual language developed over many years. Repetition, accumulation and attention to material create relationships of scale, proximity and movement. Photography, sound and installation expand this language across the exhibition and create a succession of encounters in which the body moves through changing registers of memory, place and time. The exhibition does not just look back, but through it. The mountain appears neither as an image nor as a symbol, but as a structure of experience, which finds new forms of expression through the slow process of making.
