Intermezzo. Revisiting Helmut Newton

The Helmut Newton Foundation is fundamentally renewing the permanent exhibition *Helmut Newton’s Private Property* at the Museum of Photography, without abandoning the central theme: The life of Helmut Newton and June Newton. Instead of the previous presentation, *Intermezzo* creates a cinematic interspace in which a large-format loop film is projected onto four screens. The material combines an earlier Newton portrait with previously unpublished recordings and interviews with contemporary witnesses, thus opening up a new approach to his work. The exhibition architecture is also changing: Around 100 Newton posters remain in new suspension and are supplemented by Alice Springs posters. In a 16-meter-long display case, former fashion magazines are replaced by a selection of fashion and lifestyle titles that, together with editorials by Alice Springs, open up a look at the development of fashion photography and the image of women from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. The concept is complemented by text boards, portraits and the new series *Spotlight: Behind the Frame. In each case, an iconic photograph of Helmut Newton or Alice Springs is shown in its context of origin and reception by means of contact prints, publications, notes and preliminary studies. The first episode is dedicated to Newton’s Rue Aubriot and Alice Springs’ first image for a Gitanes campaign.
