Matthew Marks presents Jordan Belson: The Cosmic View, featuring thirty-one works from 1950 to 1970 by the influential avant-garde filmmaker and painter Jordan Belson (1926–2011). Known for his experimental films that delve into consciousness and mystical abstractions, Belson began as a painter, exhibiting at SFMOMA and the Guggenheim in the late 1940s. Although he continued to create paintings and drawings, he shifted focus to filmmaking after 1950, never showcasing this aspect of his work during his lifetime. The exhibition highlights Belson’s mastery of color and light, with compositions like his early 1950s Target paintings, characterized by kaleidoscopic concentric circles. Belson viewed his art as a record of altered psychic states, aiming to reveal the universal through inner exploration. Organized with Raymond Foye and the Estate of Jordan Belson, this exhibition coincides with the centennial of his birth and includes film screenings in Los Angeles.
