Keisha Scarville: Where Salt Meets Black Water

Photographer Keisha Scarville, the 2026 UOVO Prize winner, presents a site-specific installation on the Brooklyn Museum's outdoor plaza. She overlays portraits and still lifes onto abstract patterns sourced from garments owned by her late mother, Alma, including works from her series Mama's Clothes. The striking black-and-white photographs are filled with mesmerizing details inviting reflection. The title references bodies of water in Guyana darkened by mineral-rich foliage, believed to carry healing properties. Blanketing the front stoop, Scarville's photographs offer a form of healing and communal renewal, celebrating her Guyanese heritage and the threshold between the United States and Guyana as a space for reflection and remembrance.
