For decades, this place was shaped by small businesses, cultural production, and a spirit of solidarity within the neighbourhood: studios, rehearsal rooms, photo studios, a bicycle workshop, and a non-profit wood workshop for disadvantaged people worked here side by side. Since large parts of the site were sold a few years ago, artists, musicians, and social projects have had to leave. In their place came start-ups, the Business and Law School, a smoothie producer, luxury wellness spaces, and a yoga studio that markets itself as a place “surrounded by artists.” Where art was once created, commerce now dominates — commerce that likes to adorn itself with art. Without a funding commitment from the Berlin Senate, our building is now also at risk of being sold. This would mean that the bbk would lose 25 studios, and the artists and their families would lose their livelihood — many of them will not be able to afford the studio rents that have now become standard on the open market. Berlin lives from its free spaces, its cultural diversity, and its independent scenes. We are opening our studios in order to fight for the long-term preservation of our studio location, and we look forward to welcoming many visitors!
