“Body and Landscape” showcases recent acquisitions from Laura Aguilar’s estate, highlighting her innovative self-portraiture set against the natural landscapes of Southern California and the Southwest. The exhibition reframes these environments as spaces of personal empowerment, resilience, and reclamation. Aguilar, who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, produced introspective works from the 1980s to the early 2000s that reflect her Chicana, queer identity and the experiences of her LGBTQ and Latino friends. Key pieces include her pivotal nude self-portrait, In Sandy’s Room (1989), along with significant works from her series Nature Self-Portrait (1996), Stillness (1999), Motion (1999), Center (2000–2001), and Grounded (2006–2007). A subsequent exhibition, “Laura Aguilar: Day of the Dead,” will feature her documentation of Day of the Dead celebrations in Los Angeles, running from September 20, 2026, to March 1, 2027.
