Lauren Greenfield: Social Studies

*Social Studies* is an immersive exhibition by Lauren Greenfield that examines what it means to grow up in the digital age. Building on a year-long project with a group of Los Angeles teenagers, Greenfield combines photography, real smartphone data, and filmed observations from their lives at home, at school, and with friends and family. The result is a vivid portrait of adolescence shaped by social media, now expanded from a screen-based series into a large-scale exhibition. Spread across about 5,000 square feet, the show enlarges the digital world to human scale through photographs, typologies, an immersive bedroom, an algorithm room, and a screening space for the Emmy-nominated series. By slowing down the endless scroll, Greenfield reveals how social media influences identity, relationships, self-worth, and daily behavior. The exhibition is both critical and empathetic, showing the costs of digital life while encouraging viewers to think more actively about their own relationship to technology. It also extends beyond the museum through workshops with Berlin teenagers, whose insights help shape the educational program and digital learning journey connected to the exhibition.
