Layered Narratives: The Northern Renaissance Gallery

The redesigned Northern Renaissance Sculpture and Decorative Arts gallery brings together highlights from The Met’s collection and recent acquisitions to place early modern northern European art in its historical context. Focusing on works from about 1520 to 1630, the gallery reflects a period shaped by religious upheaval, political conflict, colonial expansion, and growing global trade. As Catholic authority was challenged by the Reformation and the Holy Roman Empire held together many shifting territories, artists and patrons used objects to express power, belief, identity, and belonging. Organized thematically, the gallery includes ceramics, textiles, metalwork, clocks, chess sets, stained glass, and other forms that reveal how art functioned in imperial, colonial, and religious life. By re-presenting these objects together, the installation shows them as works of encounter, knowledge, wonder, and personal meaning, offering visitors a fresh view of northern Europe’s complex past.
