Contemporary Fine Arts presents the second solo exhibition by the Japanese-Swiss artist Leiko Ikemura under the title ‘de sensu’ (‘through the senses’). The exhibition presents new paintings and sculptures that explore the relationship between perception, body, mind and space. Touch, imaginary sounds and the idea of smells expand the experience beyond the purely visual. Based on uncertainty, Ikemura explores how people can reorient themselves in a changing world. Green figures such as ‘Green Baby’, ‘Green Mom’ and ‘Dear Spirit’ as well as the sculpture ‘Milk Lady’ refer to care, transformation, renewal and a cycle without beginning and end. Since the 1980s, Ikemura's work has been concerned with transitions, transcultural perspectives and collective consciousness beyond nations and genders. In paintings, drawings, watercolours, glazed terracotta sculptures, glass and ceramics, she combines East Asian traditions with surrealism, post-war abstraction and figurative painting. Their mythical hybrid beings, including the ‘Usagi’, embody suffering, resilience and renewal.
