Tanya Leighton presents ‘Containing the Container’, the first solo exhibition of New York-based artist Luisa Rabbia in Germany. Rabbia combines personal experiences with historical and political events and uses literature and current social developments as a starting point. The exhibition focuses on the female body as a source of energy and transformation as well as a carrier of networks of female solidarity that have grown over generations. The works refer to Neolithic mythologies in which the female body appears as a sacred container and original force of transformation. In the Transformers series, figures made up of numerous bodies show how community can transform challenges into strength. Rabbia's painting blurs the boundaries between body and nature. On large-format canvases, multi-layered image spaces oscillate between microscopic dimensions and cosmic expanses. Scraped layers of paint, fingerprints and repeated gestures make the physical work process, developed over long periods of time, visible. The emotionally deep figures give form to resilience and renewal and combine personal experiences with universally shared ones.
