Matt Browning: A Screen of Trees

The Mies van der Rohe Haus presents works by Matt Browning (*1984, lives and works in New York) made since 2013. For his sculptures, Browning works a single, continuous piece of Douglas fir into movable yet strictly interconnected chains. Their architecture creates different relationships to space: the chains can be compressed into a straight line or extended into a grid. At first glance, Browning’s sculptures appear identical, but the individual surfaces and varying proportions of the carvings arise from the wood’s different sizes and particular qualities. Together, the works form a system of units that can be arranged like words, becoming context-specific through their placement in space rather than through their making. The exhibition continues a presentation at Kunstverein München in spring 2026; the two exhibitions are like two knots in a larger chain: “Each standing alone, as one unit connected to the others.”
