Nate Lewis – Turning the Current

Fridman Gallery presents Turning the Current, the second solo exhibition by mixed-media artist Nate Lewis. Building on his acclaimed 2020 exhibition Latent Tapestries, Lewis employs his signature paper-carving techniques to explore the connections between dance movement, anatomy, medical diagnostics, and weather-pattern data. The exhibition raises questions about the interrelatedness of physical movement, history, and healing, particularly within African diasporic art and culture. Turning the Current features several new bodies of work, including life-size sculpted prints of figures in motion, abstract handmade paper “quilts” that relate in texture and patterns to the figurative works, and a multi-channel audio-visual installation that marks a significant evolution in Lewis’s mixed media practice. His intricate works on paper combine photography, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing, with dancers depicted in motion against backgrounds of embossed textures, fabric rubs, colored inks, and curvilinear shapes that respond to their movements, resembling sound waves and currents.
