David Zwirner presents "Hanging Out," featuring new work by Nate Lowman. The exhibition showcases a series of shaped canvases in the form of keys, a novel motif for the artist that evokes themes of access, security, and exclusion. Lowman, known for his recognizable shaped canvases, expands his repertoire with these key paintings, which vary from detailed replicas to more abstract interpretations. Some pieces incorporate dissonant photographic imagery, while others utilize vibrant, patterned finishes reminiscent of hardware store novelties to differentiate the keys. Additionally, a silkscreen diptych depicts two uncut keys. The works draw on diverse art-historical references, including hard-edged geometric abstraction, gestural mark-making, and the readymade, each employing distinct painterly languages while maintaining the recurring key form.
