Public Pool

Public Pool is a group exhibition exploring the swimming pool as a liminal space—neither fully public nor private—where bodies become visible and identities are negotiated. Spanning painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance documentation, the exhibition examines how artists use water and aquatic environments to explore the body, memory, desire, transformation, and collective experience. Featured artists including Carole Feuerman, Frank Hyder, Larry Sultan, Fang Lijun, and Renée Cox investigate swimmers and bathers as recurring figures through which to examine the public body. Hans Breder, Shi Chong, Yigal Ozeri, and Katinka Huang explore water as a threshold between appearance and disappearance, while Salomón Huerta, Nick Farhi, and Sacha Ingber consider quieter rituals surrounding water. At the exhibition's furthest edges, Zhang Huan's performance and mythological works by Vitaly Komar and Jeannie Weissglass transform water into a site of collective imagination.
