Publik Machen: Rauschen—Echos einer Institution

The exhibition ‘Noise: Echoes of an Institution’ sheds light on the work of the Centre for Art Exhibitions of the GDR (ZfK) and its role between state cultural policy and international cultural exchange. From 1973 to 1990, the ZfK organized exhibitions at home and abroad on behalf of the GDR Ministry of Culture. After its dissolution, the graphic collection of around 10,000 works was transferred to the ifa – Institute for Foreign Relations. The ‘noise’ refers to the cultural-political frequency behind the institution’s official narratives. Archive materials, contemporary witnesses and artistic positions open up new perspectives on a previously little researched chapter of international art history.
