The exhibition ‘Robert Rauschenberg – Crosstown’ pays tribute to the American artist who won the 1964 Grand Prize of the Venice Biennale, drawing attention to contemporary American art. Rauschenberg's work has been questioning conventions for half a century and changing the understanding of painting by combining autobiographical elements and urban fragments in multi-layered works. He uses unconventional materials, which he considers to be equivalent to traditional painting tools. Galerie Bastian focuses on the large-scale work ‘Crosstown’ from 1997, which depicts an urban landscape in a narrative, hierarchical-free composition. Through a transfer process, photographic motifs are combined with plant-based dyes and painterly elements. ‘Crosstown’ is interpreted as an early allegory of a world of infinite images and invites a constant re-evaluation of the details.
