Ruin und Rausch. Berlin 1910–1930

Ruin and Ecstasy: Berlin 1910–1930 explores Berlin during the turbulent decades of the First World War and the Weimar Republic. Through around 35 works from the Nationalgalerie’s collection, the exhibition traces the city’s contrasts between glamour and poverty, freedom and political unrest, nightlife and social hardship. The show includes painting, sculpture, film, and poetry, with works connected to Berlin either thematically or through the artists’ biographies. Highlights include Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Potsdamer Platz, Otto Dix’s portrait of Anita Berber, film excerpts by Fritz Lang and Walther Ruttmann, and poems by Anita Berber, Mascha Kaléko, and Erich Kästner.
