Textile artist Sofie Dawo, born in Saarland in 1926, created a small yet remarkably important body of work, presented here through selected representative examples. Her textile pieces function as autonomous visual artworks, with their processes of making visibly embedded in the material itself. Embracing the unpredictable, Dawo deliberately allowed chance to produce what she called “unexpected surprises.” Free from practical function, her textile experiments resist clear classification as either art or craft and assert themselves as independent works.
