Su Yu Hsin follows the material foundations of digital technologies in the film trilogy ‘Particular Waters’. The focus is on water, desert and silicon – resources and landscapes without which computer chips, data centres and artificial intelligence could not exist. Instead of showing digital infrastructures as abstract technologies, the artist focuses on their ecological and political preconditions. The first part leads to Hsinchu in Taiwan, where high-performance semiconductors are produced, and asks about the water requirements of chip manufacturing and access to this resource. Starting from the Arizona desert, the second part examines the transformation of a dry landscape into the center of semiconductor production and cloud computing. The third part connects the mining history of Dresden-Gittersee with the present day of the semiconductor industry and traces silicon through geological, industrial and political processes.
