Tacita Dean's exhibition, FILM, showcases her profound engagement with motion picture film, a medium central to her artistic practice over three decades. The highlight is her monumental 2011 installation, FILM, created for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, which serves as a tribute to the aesthetic and technological significance of analog filmmaking. This 11-minute silent 35mm film installation features a vertical projection that resembles the monolith from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, with a film strip emerging from the gallery floor. The work presents a series of complex cinematic compositions, intercutting images such as a waterfall, a street clock, and industrial architecture, framed by sprocket holes that emphasize the film's materiality. Through FILM, Dean explores themes of temporality and the unique beauty of the cinematic experience, reinforcing the vitality of film in an era of digital dominance.
