The Sound of Courage – Music and Equality in the Nordic Countries

What can a music industry look like where equality is not just a claim, but a reality? The Nordic countries are seen worldwide as role models for equality. But how equal is the music industry really? Why do musicians and gender minority artists still earn less, are less often on the big festival stages and are still underrepresented in key positions in the industry? The exhibition »The Sound of Courage« takes these questions as its starting point and tells the stories of artists who had the courage to make grievances visible and to initiate change. Triggered by the #MeToo movement and recent debates about sexism in the music industry, the exhibition focuses on those voices that have transformed silence into public discussion. With visual, video and audio material as well as portraits of artists and projects, the exhibition impressively shows how music can become an instrument of social change. It brings together projects and artists from all five Nordic countries and their autonomous regions, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Åland.
