Tom Hunter Selects

Co-curated by east London photographer Tom Hunter and the V&A East Youth Collective (2023-24), this display explores Tom's 40-year relationship with east London as his home, subject, and artistic inspiration. Drawing from the V&A's collections and Tom's personal archive, it examines east London as a place of radical thinking and resilience, reflecting on photography's role in documenting underrepresented communities. Objects range from cut-and-paste graphics by Peter Kennard, Jamie Reid (Sex Pistols), and Gee Vaucher (Crass) to posters from the 1978 'Carnival Against the Nazis' and M11 Link Road protests. Tom's selections include work by photographers Dorothea Lange and Paul Trevor, tracing his own route into photography through documenting squatting communities. Part of the annual X Selects programme, which invites creative practitioners to develop capsule displays in the Why We Make galleries at V&A East Museum.
