Vietnam. Kunst. DDR. Reclaiming Solidarity

Stiftung Kunstforum Berliner Volksbank, Kaiserdamm 105, 14057, Berlin

September 9, 2026 – December 6, 2026

The exhibition sheds light on the motif of international solidarity in artistic exchange between Vietnam and the GDR. This political idea became particularly clear during the Vietnam War, which provoked broad expressions of solidarity in the GDR and stimulated diverse artistic productions. At the same time, the exhibition focuses on the life realities of Vietnamese contract workers and shows how contemporary artists critically deal with them. A closer look at these interdependencies opens up space for a discourse on power relations, one-sided projections, cultural attributions and individual scope for action. Based on selected works from the GDR and the present, the exhibition examines how solidarity is expressed in art and invites a reflection on the concept itself. The presentation is complemented by works from the art collection of the Berliner Volksbank, which place the exhibited works in a larger context of socialist image production or can be re-examined in correspondence with them.
