Mariko Makino – Outside

Entrance presents Outside, a solo exhibition of new work by Mariko Makino featuring large-scale outdoor sculptures and indoor works. Makino's practice traditionally centered on neon and wood, influenced by natural forms observed from her upstate New York studio. For this exhibition, she shifts focus from competing with nature to engaging with utilitarian structures—power lines, farming equipment, substations—that hold and transfer energy while blending into landscapes. Using galvanized steel mesh fencing combined with neon tubing, Makino creates monumental yet personable sculptures that transform across day and night. Neon, stripped of commercial signage associations, is filtered through metal mesh to create atmospheric color rather than legible form. The outdoor works, constructed piece-by-piece from manipulated fencing, reflect natural ecosystems as interconnected networks. Complementing these are indoor sculptures at human scale, made from reclaimed wood, string, and neon. Viewers must return across time and light conditions to experience works fully, as neon activates only at night.
