Daichi Takagi – Suchness

David Zwirner presents Suchness, an exhibition of new paintings by Japanese artist Daichi Takagi, marking his first solo show in the UK. The works blur the lines between figuration and abstraction, reflecting Takagi's introspective engagement with everyday phenomena. Recurring motifs such as trees, stones, rain, and the moon evoke the natural world while emphasizing the transient nature of perception. Takagi's practice centers on experiencing objects as pure phenomena, where the distinction between subject and object, and inside and outside, remains unresolved, allowing the world to manifest as an immediate presence. The title, Suchness (真如), refers to a state of being where things exist as they are. Takagi seeks to embody the presence of his subjects and the surrounding space, drawing on modern Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida's concept of 'pure experience' and Eastern philosophies of non-duality, which view the self and world as fluid rather than fixed.
