Roy DeCarava – the sound i saw

David Zwirner, Los Angeles, 606 North Western Avenue, 90004, Los Angeles

19 de setembro de 2026 – 31 de outubro de 2026

David Zwirner presents an exhibition of photographs by Roy DeCarava, curated by Ebony L. Haynes, titled the sound i saw, at the gallery’s Los Angeles location. This exhibition showcases DeCarava's exploration of the interplay between visual and aural elements, created from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Initially compiled as a handmade artist’s book, it was later exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1983. The works feature everyday life in New York City, including street scenes and candid moments of jazz musicians, captured in tonally rich silver gelatin photographs. DeCarava aimed to evoke the sounds of life, providing “images for the head and for the heart.” An adjacent gallery will feature a listening room inspired by the artist’s playlists and favorite jazz albums. This marks the fourth solo exhibition of DeCarava’s work in LA, following significant past presentations at various institutions.
