Alix Cléo Roubaud: Si quelque chose noir

Galerie Buchholz, Fasanenstraße 30, 10719, Berlin

September 10, 2026 – October 31, 2026

With »Si quelque chose noir«, Galerie Buchholz is dedicating a solo exhibition to the Canadian-born artist Alix Cléo Roubaud (1952-1983) for the first time in Germany. The exhibition is curated by Hélène Giannecchini. As a photographer and author, Roubaud developed an experimental and radical practice with which she explored the limits of the photographic medium. She worked almost exclusively in the darkroom in the bathroom of her Paris apartment and used experimental development techniques, repeatedly exposed negatives as well as intensive brightening and burning. Abstract light manipulations, their »pencil of light«, impurities and viragations characterize the rare high-key prints. Since Roubaud destroyed their negatives, each print becomes a unique piece. The focus is on the outstanding series "Si quelque chose noir" ("If something black"), in which her art reaches a climax.
