Howard Greenberg Gallery presents "Notes from the Margins: Allen Ginsberg and Vivian Maier," an exhibition commemorating the centennial of both artists born in 1926. Running from June 4 to September 12, 2026, it reexamines their distinct yet resonant legacies. The exhibition juxtaposes Ginsberg’s poetic and photographic sensibilities with Maier’s street photography, showcasing how both transformed everyday experiences into powerful records of memory and human presence. Ginsberg’s work documents queer identity, political unrest, and the emotional landscape of postwar America, while Maier, a nanny by profession, created a vast archive of urban life, discovered posthumously. Featuring around 80 prints, Maier’s experimental film footage, and a film of Ginsberg reciting "Howl," the exhibition explores themes of observation, solitude, and marginality. It positions the margin as a generative space for alternative histories and identities, emphasizing the enduring impact of artists who defy conventional expectations of recognition.
